1995 1.8 Miata Exhaust Issue Sign In

About 6 Months ago I bought a 95 Miata (90,000 mi) and loved it considering I was driving a junker before. I started to install after-market parts such as a new high-flow air intake and filter, new headlights, and cd player. The most recent one was a new exhaust. I replaced the muffler, connector pipe, and catalytic converter. Everything came together fine and I started it up it was smooth. After driving it around the block, I noticed an awful smell. My girlfriend describes it as burning plastic. I'm trying to figure out if it is a leak somewhere or perhaps my (new) catalyst is bad. The only thing that makes me think it ISNT a leak is that the smell doesn't quite smell like pre-catalyst exhaust in my opinion. I don't really notice a decrease in performance though, although I don't notice an increase either. (There was a major increase in performance w/ the new air intake BTW)

I've been driving with the top down as to not die. Wink

Thanks,
Will

P.S. I completely recommend these cars because the only problems I have had was a result of my own tinkering

You mean like this? Just kidding - the new parts probably have (had) a coating (plastic no less) to keep then pretty till you install them. It should go away if it's just that and probably is. Give it one good highway run and that should end it,

Thanks for your quick reply!

I thought about that too because the sprayed insulation that was in the box was also inside the muffler and pipe. It wasen't alot but was noticable.
I drove for work today for about 30 miles. I still smell it occasionally, but it seems to come and go, but it doesn't seem as bad as before. One other thing is that it seems to be very loud. I didn't think it would be as loud because the tone was described as "slightly louder than stock exhaust parts".

I'll give it a day or two and if the smell doesn't go away, I will lift it again and check all my connections.

Thanks Cool
