Changed the head gaskets on a 1994 C-1500 Chevy. Got an error code "15" so replaced the coolant sensor and the thermostat. The truck starts OK but has a hesitation in the throttle (TBI) , smells like it's running rich and puts out black smoke just like it's being choked.

Why did you change the head gaskets ? Did you have codes prior to the head gasket repair ? Have you checked the grounds located at the thermostat housing bolt these are notorious for corrosion and false runability issues.Relocate them if you hav'nt to a intake manifold bolt.

My daughter drove the truck when it was overheating and blew a head gasket so we replaced it. There were never any engine codes before that. After getting it all together and running, kept getting a "15" engine code off the on board link. Changed the temp sensor, thermostat and knock sensor. Still showing a "15" code and is still hesitating and running rich. Also, when we took it to get it inspected, it failed the emissions test (co2) and the guy there said it was probably the cat converter so we also replaced that and it still dosen't pass which is due, I think, to the running rich problem. It smells and runs just like it's being "choked" and is usiing a lot more fuel than it used to.

Did you replace the correct sensor?

There is a coolant temperature sensor for the computer and there is a coolant temperature switch/sender for the gauge/light.

They look similar..click here
And then click here...
Coolant sensor is located by the thermostat housing....click
Coolant temperature switch/sender is located in the cylinder head...Click

Just a thought

Appreciate the reply Jim. We did replace the one by the thermostat.

You might have broke or cracked the vacume line to the map sensor check closely it does not take much.
