I have a 1994 Villager that stumble and backfires when starting out. It acts like there is a timing problem or lean mixture. It runs better when cold. I have replaced the distributer cap and rotor with no change. The check engine light does not come on.

What area should I check?

So may things that the list is to long to type out; you could begin by having the fuel pressure tested, fuel filter replaced. Possibly having the injectors professionally cleaned. After that I would get into scanning available data, looking at sensors and sensor inputs, that in this case may still be within their parameters but to an extreme end; not triggering a code.

Thanks for the feed back. The fuel filter has been replaced and the pressure is OK. The car has a cracked head and it was replaced along with the timing belt and water pump. The car ran fine for about 1,000 miles and then started acting up. The mechanic that did the work, checked fuel pressure, and TPS. He said the catalytic converter was plugged.

The muffler shop said there was nothing wrong with the converter and that the exhaust system was OK.

The engine is responsive and seems to run OK when in neutral. It bogs down, chokes up and backfires after it is warmed up. After the car reaches 35-40mph it seems to run better.

I would like to know the order of checking the sensors. I do not have a scanner, just a multimeter.

The order is a scan tool, to read the computers interpretation of sensor data. From there if you see a suspicious looking sensor you would go in with a multi-meter and or a lab scope to determine whether it is a sensor, sensor wiring or computer that is at the root of the problem. Many people think that scan tools are just for reading codes, but that’s just the beginning or their capabilities; when used by someone you is familiar with the vehicle’s systems and the scan tool itself.

I checked the spark and it was weak, so I checked the coil and it was good. Replaced the wires and now have good spark and car runs OK, but trans is stuck in 3rd gear.
