1994 Toyota Tercel, 4 Cyl. 3VZ-EE I went to start it this morning and all it does is cranks over, no fire whatsoever. It was running just fine yesterday when we parked it. So far I have checked the fuel injection side of the fuel filter and it seems like it is getting plenty of fuel to that point. I also checked for spark, and it seems to be getting spark. But it still just cranks over. Any ideas?

This is courtesy of our fellow moderator Hammer Time. All "crank, no start" conditions are approached in the same way. Every engine requires certain functions to be able to run. Some of these functions rely on specific components to work and some components are part of more than one function so it is important to see the whole picture to be able to conclude anything about what may have failed. Also, these functions can ONLY be tested during the failure. Any other time and they will simply test good because the problem isn't present at the moment. If you approach this in any other way, you are merely guessing and that only serves to replace unnecessary parts and wastes money. Every engine requires spark, fuel and compression to run. That's what we have to look for. These are the basics that need to be tested and will give us the info required to isolate a cause. 1) Test for spark at the plug end of the wire using a spark tester. If none found, check for power supply on the + terminal of the coil with the key on. 2) Test for injector pulse using a small bulb called a noid light. If none found, check for power supply at one side of the injector with the key on. 3) Use a fuel pressure gauge to test for correct fuel pressure, also noticing if the pressure holds when key is shut off. 4) If all of these things check good, then you would need to do a complete compression test. Once you have determined which of these functions has dropped out, you will know which system is having the problem.

I believe this is a timing belt engine, so if you have verified spark and injector pulse and are getting strange compression numbers you need to verify valve timing, and a slipped timing belt can do this. I saw a car with 50,000 on a new engine come in on the wrecker once that the owner thought his motor was blown. What it was turned out that the rubber seal that goes on the plastic cover for the timing belt lost a chunk of itself and that got between the timing belt and the timing gear of the cam. Threw it off two teeth. Got that fixed up, set the valve timing to spec and its probably still on the road today. This may not be the situation you find yourself in, but the important part of this is to remember that I did not condemn his motor right away for low compression. I tested what was happening and found a small issue that explained the problem. By not throwing parts at it until I had a confirmed diagnosis, I saved the customer a lot of money and the shop its reputation, since they had built that engine before I started working there and I didn't know that until after I fixed it.
