1994 Saturn SL1 shuts off suddenly when i come to stop Sign In

after sitting for months, i did a general maintenance tune up and drove it for about a 150 highway miles (after fixing the stick shift wobble) Once I finished my trip, i drove around town for a few days and suddenly my 1994 Saturn SL1 started cutting off whenever i come to a stop. what could this problem be?

Does it start back up after it stalls? Check engine light on?

Yes, starts right up with no problem. but i have to gun it, to keep it from shutting off while i'm stopped.

One easy and cheap thing you can try, if you hadn't already, is to clean the idle air control motor pintle and the pintle bore. You can also clean the throttle plate and bore too. Get some Seafoam deepcreep, some rags, and a tooth brush and clean them out really good. If the IAC pintle bore and pintle is gunked up that can cause your symptoms.

it was too late to do anything last night, so i test drove it first thing this morning and it only cuts off when i apply the brakes. It will continue to idle once i start up (with no problem) until i apply the brake.
would your suggetion be any different with this matter of fact
information?

Not sure if Discretesignals is around for the second. If idle is at normal RPM without touching brake and then chokes it the vacuum booster is almost always the problem drawing away too much vacuum from the intake manifold so engine could stall or stumble with a failed one. Pinch off or plug of vacuum hose to it and bet it wont stall but you wont have power assist so do that just sitting still if you want to,

that seems to be the culprit, i noticed a crack in the vb hose, so i put a clamp on it. It made a 65% difference. I know once i replace the hose (connector) it will cure the problem 100%.

Thx

Hose to the booster would be nicer than the whole booster - hope so. If leaking/not right hitting the brakes would just make it run worse or die out so what you found still has to be fixed. Good luck,

While you're replacing junk rubber hoses, grab a few feet of the sizes of vacuum hose used on your car. Its dirt cheap at the parts store. Change every hose on your engine one at a time to not get anything mixed up. These pieces of cheap rubber have sat under the hood in all weather extremes for almost 20 years and if they aren't junk now they're about to be. I'd bet they all had small leaks that you never knew about and the booster hose failing created a large enough one to be the straw that broke the camel's back and alerted you of the problem. You'll save future troubles changing all the hoses now. All you need is the hose and a fresh razor blade for clean cuts
