I'm out of town and my mother was driving my 1994 Jeep Grand Cherokee Limited. She started it (didn't let it warm up), got it about 50 yards down the street, and fluid (she thinks transmission fluid) exploded out of the bottom. My coolant is also pink, and is not rated to drive in the freezing cold. It sounds to me like the radiator cracked due to the incorrect antifreeze mixture. I have never heard of a transmission "blowing up" the way it was described, under normal driving conditions. So, my question is, has anybody else?

What may have happened is the transmission cooler; which is a coil that runs through the bottom of the rad has split open for whatever reason. This coil has hot transmission fluid running through it and is cooled by the coolant (anti freeze) in the rad tank. If this coil has split then transmission fluid will enter the rad and anti freeze will enter the transmission. Transmission fluid isn’t a big deal in the rad; just flush it out and everything will be ok as far as the engine cooling system is concerned. The problem is the coolant getting into the transmission; the anti freeze will attack the glue that holds the friction material to the clutch plates. When this happens the friction material will come off of the clutch plates and jam the clutches up applying the wrong planetary gear set at the wrong time and yes it could cause the transmission to explode.
