1994 Ford Contour SE No Power at all Sign In

Hello all and thanks for taking the time to read this! I have a 1994 Ford Contour SE V6 5 speed. Right now the car has absolutely no power at all and as a result cannot start the car. I can't even lock the doors or turn on the lights as the car has power locks and windows like the battery was completely drained. I had the battery tested and it was tested as a good battery and, I checked fuses and they all seem to be good. I did not however check relays, but would not know how to check those. When I placed the battery back into the car after being tested, there was still absolutely no power at all. The connections are clean and tight. Now the night before I could turn on the lights and the dome light inside the car was able to turn on and the radio came on ect, the next day everything was dead. Please tell me what could be wrong? Is it possible that the battery is completely drained even if it tested good? Thanks for any help with this and happy holidays!

If you are sure the battery is good - check the connections of the other ends of the battery cables. The + may go thru a solonoid and keep chasing it to the starter. Of course all this best done with battery neg is enough disconnected while you work. - T

Hello Tom, thanks for the quick reply. I was able to take a look at the + cable. I followed the cable to a power distribution box as labeled (but it seemed more like a fuse box with some relays also in it) The cable was in pretty bad shape as it was melted and also exposed and it looked like it was shorting. I was able to cut the insulation and use electrical tape to cover the exposed wires. I hooked up the + and the - again and still no power. Any ideas on what I can check? Thanks again.

You need to replace the cable. There must have been some unreal voltage draw to cause that. The next thing you can try is a voltage drop test when starter is asked to start. It's the biggest drain on a battery that most cars have and it has a real problem it will show up in voltage drop. Again - if you are sure that the battery is good the voltage should read just a smidge over 12V with everything off. While and engine is cranking or trying to the voltage should not drop below 9V with a good battery and things all right. If no drop and no start you have to chase the cable all the way to the starter. That might be a near total burn out of wiring and that cable feeds the whole rest of the car. I've only messed with one Contour and I recall how hard it was to get at many items - real tight for room as you know. Let us know how you are making out. Good luck with the fix -T

Thanks again, your quickness in replying is greatly appreciated! Smile I will do what you recommended as I did feel myself that the + cable is going to need to be replaced. I plan on starting this hopefully tonight and finish by sometime Friday after work or early Sat. As soon as I complete this task, I will post an update and let you know what I find.

Re: 1994 Ford Contour SE No Power at all Sign In

Hello again and I hope everyone is off to a great 2006 so far! Well, here is what I have found. Me and another person looked at the car over the holiday, and hooked another 12V source to the car. It seems once we did this, everthing powered up again which leaves me with more questions. Also, after removing the negative, the car died so I would think that this also means that the alternator is dead which I also suspected. Is it possible for a battery to test good, but be bad? When I had it tested at a store, it showed it to be good on the digital readout, but yet wont power the car. Also, the Alternator looks like it's gonna be a pain to get to.I've replaced a few Alternators in the past, but this looks like it is well hidden. Do you think it is even worth me trying to do it myself or should I take it in and have it done for me? Thanks again for any help you can give me.

* Can a battery be tested OK and not - Yes!! If it's over three or four years old it's junk. Never mind how long a new one says it's good for - the warranty will be junk too at about that age and they know it.

** Note on Batteries: They are almost all a lead - acid product that are a series of plates that MUST remain separated but flake chips to the bottom of the battery over time. When those flakes hit the bottom of the plates the battery is toast!! (Just for fun for some old timers - you used to be able to take the top off a battery and just replace the plates that were bad) Hey - so much for ancient history - it's unheard of now for some 50 years! We just toss them out.

You must know that the battery is good and if it behaves with a jump it probably isn't.

***Alternators: They won't charge a dead battery! They actually rely on some current to work at all or they don't work. They will charge a low charged battery. Joke: It's a labor union dealSmile

***** You must know that the battery is good and then check the voltage out when running which should be 13.5 to 14.5 or so while running and chances are the alternator is good. If no change when running it's probably bad.

Those and many cars have tight working quarters, Tell us your success story - T

Winkthere is a large flat fuse right behind your throttle body, and it is best to get to from passenger side.look right behind throttle body after you remove breather and you will see a little black box about 3 inches long, and about 1 inch wide. the top cap will pop off just use ashort screwdriver. inside this is ahigh voltage fuse, check to see if it is burned or melted, this would solve your problem if it is, because this sends current to the altenator.also if possible go to a junk yard and take this off another contour.you can't buy this fuse alone on aftermarket, the only way to get it is with a whole new +cable thru the dealer and it is expensive. junk yard, is the way to go, two small nuts holding the fuse in,jerk it out put it back in yours and your done. hope this cures your problem.
