1994 Ford Aspire engine issues

I have a 1994 Ford Aspire. I was driving it for a while and it was running fine. All of the sudden it backfired and lost power. I got it to the side of the road and sat there for a minute, and it was idling smooth. When I went to accelerate to take off, the engine started sputtering and I couldn’t get it to go any faster than 20-25 Mph. I am not sure what happened but it didn’t overheat and it idles smooth when it is in park, it only acts up when you try to accelerate. The car is a 1994 Ford Aspire base, the engine is a 1.3 liter 8 valve SOHC 4 cylinder.

It backfire out the intake or exhaust?
