1994 Beretta won't start when weather is COLD Sign In

I have a 1994 Chevy Beretta with a 2.2L Auto. I've had this car since it was bought Brand New. A couple times 10 yrs ago the car would not start when it got very cold outside 0 degrees or below. Now it's doing it again but more frequently. If the temp is very cold out, then car will turn over (crank) fine but not start. It sounds like it is missing or firing out of time. If you pump the gas pedal alot, it will sound like it almost wants to start and fires but backfires through intake, etc... It has spark and fuel and is turning over at normal speed (battery and starter both good). If you wait a day or so or when it warms up a bit, the car will start and run just fine??? Car has 130K miles on it but is in good condition and runs great usually. Vehicle has Bosch platinum plugs with about 5K miles, New plug wires, New air filter & PCV valve, Head gasket rplcd 10K miles ago, New coil packs recently (both of them), fuel filter rplcd 20K miles ago, all sensors unplugged -connections checked & packed with dielelectric grease. Once weather warms up and vehicle starts, it will run just great? The biggest mystery is why it sounds like it's firing out of time? I've tried to have the car scanned for codes but several places say their scanner will not read the car??? PLEASE, any help on this, car has me baffled.... HELP!

Haven't had alot of luck with aftermarket plugs in GM's did this start after tune up??.. Should use delco plugs in GM's.. did you gap the plugs properly excessive gap will cause hard start in extreme cold.

This happened BEFORE tune-up periodically and then just re-surfaced recently. I have used Bosch Platinum plugs in this for the last 100K miles with no problem. Again, this just happened this winter in the last couple months (it's been ALOT colder than normal). Already checked the plug gap when this first showed up. I don't believe this is a spark issue, it seems like more of a timing/firing issue ( because of the backfiring through intake and the mis-firing while cranking) possibly due to sensor (intermittent crank sensor failure???) input (or lack of) or ECM failure??? The problem is, it runs So well once it finally decides to start.

Backfiring through intake would indicate to me that it's flooded.. next time it does it take a plug out and see if it's gas soaked..
Don't think it would be a crank sensor wouldn't fire at all usally.
Doubt ECM too, but wouldn't hurt to do a visuall inscpection if you feel eager. look for heavy corrosion, green connectors or pins and look for any signs of water entery.
could have injector leaking down when cold.

Here is another trick you can use to get a engine un-flooded. pull Fuel pump relay and crank with pedel to the floor for 60 seconds.. put relay back and crank and see if it starts. if it does then you know the cause is engine flooding.

Let me add here that you were lucky. Bosch platinum, from my experience is the absolute worst plug to run in a GM, Ford or even Chrysler engine. I have had numerous instances of vehicles being brought to me for misfire problems that were traced back to Bosch platinum plugs being installed. They ran great once the Bosch were removed and OEM brand installed.

Well, Replaced the Bosch plugs with AC Platinum plugs and put in a New fuel filter just for peace of mind. The #4 plug looked pretty dark (mis-firing), the other 3 looked very good. I had a chance to do a little diagnosis while it was in the No-start condition. The plugs were NOT wet (No Fuel flooding) and there was spark with a Spark tester (Not Crank sensor), Compression is 120-130psi range. This happpened this time in my heated garage at 60 degrees, so condition was getting worse??? As soon as I put in the New plugs, It started right up, so not sure if it's fixed for real or not but will wait and see. I'll keep this updated as to whether this is fixed or not.

More then likely that is your problem.. like i pointed out early and hammer running aftermarket plugs in GM generally not a good idea.. Rule of thumb is to stick to OEM when ever possible.
