1993 Honda Accord, 16 valve, programmed fuel injection. 235000 miles.
For a while the idle on my accord had been surging (800 to 3000 rpm). After some research, the Fast Idle Thermo Valve, and Air Intake Control Valve were where I decided to start. But after replacing both of the parts the problem still remained. After some spraying around with air intake cleaner I discovered a vacuum leak being caused by a bad gasket between the engine block and the intake manifold. So I took the air intake apart and replaced the gasket. After putting the car back together the problem became worse, now the engine will surge from 800 rpm to about 5000 for about 30 seconds then, the check engine light will come on and the car will idle very roughly at about 1200 rpm. The trouble code for the check engine light is for the AICV but, when I remove the air intake duct there is vacuum leading back to the AICV when the part is plugged in and no vacuum when the part is unplugged (i.e. working properly). Not to mention there is no change in the idle when when the AICV is open or closed and also adjusting to idle has no effect. At this point I suspected a problem with the EGR valve as when I manually lift the diaphragm for this part there is no change in the idle either. I changed the EGR to no avail. At this point, I've double checked all my vacuum lines and they are fine. I listened to my fuel injectors and it sounds like they are all working. All indicators are pointing to the AICV and this is not the problem, any other suggestions?

I would get that can of cleaner back out and give it a good once over again. Problem got worse after the intake was off. Have a fire extinguisher handy.
