1993 Toyota Engine problems

My 1993 Toyota Camry runs really rough and sometimes will not go at all. When it does go it feels like it has absolutly no power to accelerate but is fine when it gets up to speed. I have taken it to numerous garages and it will usually run ok for a week or two but then the problem just comes back. I know a little about cars and could fix it myself if I only knew what is wrong with it. What could the problem be?
