Hi there. Thank you very much for showing an interest :)

My car has little power and is very slow to accelerate, so slow that it can barely make it up moderate hills. On top of that the engine compartment has faint, slightly reverberating pinging noises that seem to occur at a regular frequency (I'd say around 2 hz, although I believe the frequency varies directly with the speed of the car). I noticed both problems at the same time.

One night I'm driving the bad boy all around bellevue wa (which is a very hilly place) and around seattle on the freeway with no problems, and the next morning when I try to go to work I can't make it up my neighborhood hill without the engine sounding like it's been turned into a lawn-mower.

Here's a list of things I can think of which might help:
Although I changed my oil about 1500 miles ago when I checked the oil levels yesterday it was crayola black.
I've had the car for about 8000 miles and since I bought it, after ignition I've had to put it in gear and wait about 7 seconds before applying the pedal would translate to power. The rpms would rev up but the car wouldn't move. After those seconds though it would run normally, and at stop lights or any other dead stop the acceleration would operate normally. Because of this, when I noticed my big problem a few days ago I tried replacing the tranny-fluid but doing so didn't solve the problem. (I did so to the specs laid out in my manual).
The car can drive up hills but only in higher gears so I need a long gradual hill in order gather speed.
I also notice a much greater than normal engine smell now. I don't think it's oil or anything, just that engine smell you get after driving on a hot day (although it hasn't gotten above 55 (f) here lately).
In the weeks leading up to my problem I had noticed a drop in gas milage, increased exhaust, and an increased buildup of black resin at the tail-pipe opening, though the resin was already rather thick before this.

Looking around online has led me to wonder if I have a catalytic converter problem or a blown gasket somewhere, but I really know nothing about cars. I hope this is enough info to nail down a problem but if you have any questions at all please feel free to ask.

Thank you very much,
-Adam

Edit: Oh, I should also point out that in the past two months I have had to use old gas from a gas can as I ... ran out of gas. After using that gas to get myself to a new station I bought a fuel system cleaner additive and put that in on about half a tank.
