I was driving home today when my serpentine belt shredded. I originally thought that this wasn't a huge problem as I bought a new one and replaced it.
However, that didn't work. I can get the belt on and in place, but it jumps off of the crank and starts to shred again as soon as I start the car. Without the belt on, all of the other pulleys/wheels turn and spin freely. The power steering wheel isn't as loose as the other wheels, but I think that is normal.
I think the problem is with the crank. When the belt is on and spring loaded into place the crank seems to be cockeyed a little bit, and when the belt is off I can move the crank back and forth some. Should the crank have this much give? Is this the problem?
If anyone has any opinions on whether it is an issue with the crank or if they have any other ideas I would really appreciate it.

The tensioner can lose it and cause improper tension when you aren't looking but if you notice the crank damper/harmonic balancer out of line or not true it has failed. It is attached directly to the crankshaft but the pulley track/outer ring is rubber that can fail that is what absorbs the normal engine resonance needed and why it's called a harmonic balancer. That's fairly rare to fail but they can and no doubt difficult to replace in this transverse engine as the puller may not fit in there well without some trickery. Obviously this is a MUST fix situation,
