1992 Mits. Eclipe Wont Idle after Timing done Sign In

The timing belt on my 2.0 non turbo 92 eclipse slipped, so i had a mobile mechanic change the belts, tensioner, and reset the timing yesterday. The car idled fine the last time it was ran prior to the timing being redone.

Now when the car is started, the gas peddle has to be all the way to the floor to get the car to not turn off. The car will start up and just sit at 450-550 rpm for a good 15 seconds before the rpm gauge responds to the gas peddle being down. Initially, the throttle being open will only stop the car from dieing.

I have scanned for air leaks and anything that may have been left unplugged. I am not very mechanically inclined, so have no idea on what the problem could be. Could the timing be off still?

That is an interference engine so if it jumped time while running, it will usually bend valves. He may also have it out of time. You need to take a compression test to see how messed up it is.

Right, ran into bent valves when i originally swapped the engine. The valves didnt seem to be bent before the timing was done because it was idling fine. Ill get the compression checked.

Just to clarify, did it run well with the new "timing" belt then went south when ignition timing was checked or adjusted? Still if valves were bent it would show right up as Hammer said with a compression test,

Had the problem the first time the car was started since the timing was finished.

Two things here chris. Timing belt and set ignition timing with engine running. If it ran lousy with just the timing belt if put in properly that strongly suggests damage to valves which would show up right now with a quick compression test.

I don't know how many "teeth" one could jump before valves get involved. Chances are it could have jumped a tooth or two still run and no damage. When way off damage is inevitable OR if not put in properly could be damaging.

Again - did it run worth anything when just the belts were done? Why did this tech leave you with a lousy running car if right away it went bad and not explain what might have happened.

Not proactively replacing timing belts in interference engines is a VERY expensive bad habit,

T
