1992 Honda Accord Dies While Driving

This is a 4 cylinder 2.0 with 170,000 miles. I drive this to work 5 days a week about 30 miles one way. Some days it will stall 2-3 times a day. No pattern, it will die at a stoplight or cruising at 55 mph. So far each time it's done it (about 20 times this month) I am able to get it started relatively quick within 5-15 seconds. Before it dies it doesn't sputter, no warning. I have replaced the distributor cap but that didn't help. About 1 1/2 years ago it died on the freeway and wouldn't start, replaced the distributor from junkyard and fired right up. Could this be the same problem? Could it be the ignitor inside the distributor? Thanks for any help.

That's a tough one because you have such a small window to catch the glitch. There are many things that could cause that sort of scenario. Could be a loss of spark because the igniter, coil, or position sensor in the distributor is failing. It could be a wiring problem causing loss of power to the ECU, main relay, ignitor/coil, or fuel pump. Could be the ECU is faulty or its losing the position sensor signal or command to the igniter to fire the coil. SO many things it could be, but you won't know unless you diagnose it.
The only thing that I can recommend is that you need to monitor some of those systems using a multichannel DSO and fuel pressure test gauge while your driving. Since most people don't have that kind of equipment, the only other way to figure it out is when the problem fails hard and the engine absolute won't restart for a longer period of time.
Another option is to find a shop that has the expertise and equipment to catch glitches.

Thanks for the tips on my Honda. Went to the junkyard and got a used distributor and haven't had any issues since. Thanks, Jay
