Hey guys,

I have a 1991 Toyota 4 runner with a V6 motor(200k mi). It seems to be cutting off while going down the road. it drops 500-1000 RPM. but continues to run. It will do this 4-5 times in a 30 mile distance. It runs good and has good pressure. I have replaced fuel filter, plugs, wires, Rotor cap. It does this at all speeds and in all gears. Its bad....it feels like some thing is getting sucked through the motor lol!(i know its not). Starts fine, idles fine and runs well. Any help would be great!

Thanks

I have had several 4 runners of that era have had problems with intermittant fuel pump drop in pressure. The way I finally caught it was to install a fuel pressure gauge and run the line up the rear of hood and tape to windshield. Drove on a light traffic road till it did its little trick and low and behold , the pressure dropped a few seconds before. If you are capable of copying this test be very carefull triple check for leaks.

so the fix is fuel pump? fuel pump had crossed my mind but so did a coil or ignitor as they call it. When it does it, its really hard like your running over a 2x4 in the road or something. thanks for the fast reply.

Yes a bad ignition component is a possibility. The only way to find a intermittant problem such as this is a process of elimination. Hard to monitor ignition /spark on the go . That is why I choose to monitor fuel . If the fuel press remains steady THEN you can start chasing those electrical gremlins.
