1991 skylark misfiring Sign In

my girlfriend recently purchased a 1991 buick skylark with the 2.3L quad 4. on occasion it would sputter for a second and then pick up again. this same thing would more frequently happen at idle. last night we lost the cylinder all together and the muffler was glowing red shortly after. so i changed the plugs and their respective coils. ( the quad 4 has the "idi" or integrated direct ignition) which took me a second to figure out but all went well. except of course for the fact that it didnt fix the problem. i did notice that the misfiring plug was coated in fresh gas so i assume its getting fuel. im going to do a fuel pressure test tomorrow but until then im not entirely sure what to attack next. any help would be greatly appreciated.

Replace the white coil housing and the spark plug boots. Also make sure you used Delco plugs and no other brand.

well i replaced all the plugs and all 4 coils, not sure what you mean by coil housing. all four coils attach to steel nipples protruding from the intake manifold cover. though i have heard that on another forum... maybe im missing something Shocked greatly appreciate the input regardless, i'll be sure to check into that. also wondered if maybe timing could be the problem. though that doesnt make much sense... why 1 cylinder, and why all of a sudden? i dunno, thanks again tho

Forget the timing it's not adjustable.
You need to change the housing that the coils sit in. That will resolve your problem.

You need to change 7,9,10 and 11

You pretty much wasted your money on the coils, it's usually the housing that causes the problems.

took everything apart and noticed a little charring on the housing. so i replaced one of the coils and it runs like a dream. just read your last post... i guess this time it wasnt the housing Wink thanks for the advice, i wasnt even sure where the coil packs were. and now i know what to look for. thanks again

So, the new coil was bad?

no, i believe i got my terminology wrong in one of the previous posts. i replaced all 4 plugs and boots. but once you posted that diagram ( very helpful by the way) everything kinda clicked. i went out, tore it all apart and noticed a bad coil. i had no idea the coils were inside the white housing. thanks again for your time, you've been extremely helpful Wink
