I have a 1991 Rodeo with a V6 and 5 speed 200,000 miles. When I first start her up, cold or not, she idles at 2000 rpm. after a couple minutes it comes down to 1200 for a few minutes then down where it belongs at 900. I have checked for a air leak in hose and around intake ect. and put in new temp sensor, o2 and iac valve but it still does it. it acts like the older engines with a fast idle function. But it is giving me terrible gas mileage. I read about a wire on p/s pump but mine doesn't seem to have one. I sure hope someone has had this problem and knows a solution. thanks in advance.

Yea that is a bit high and with your description of how the idle steps down the IAC system is working. These 3.1lt throttle body injection systems were famous for the gasket between the throttle body and manifold failing. A piece of the gasket would get sucked into the engine, creating a vacuum leak. You can spray intake air cleaner around the base of the TBI unit; if the rpm changes you've found a leak. This could also be that someone has played with the minimum base idle setting. Before we get into that check out the base gasket and let us know what you've found. Dan Canadian "EH"
