My 16 year old son just bought a 91 Chevy Cavalier Z24 with a 3.1L engine and a 3 speed automatic with 114,000 miles on it.

The problem: The Z is very hard to start. It usually requires starting fluid for success. It usually stalls several times before it warms up. You have to take off fast or it will stall. If you're driving about 40+ mph and step on it, causing it to down shift, the car with start to take off fast then just die. It's like someone turned the key off. No stumbling or hesitating before it stalls. The oil was very thick and black but has been changed. I think it has a bad water pump but otherwise I haven't noticed any unusual engine noises. The starter is begining to go bad with all the abuse from the hard starting. The previous owner removed the fuel filter and replaced it with a rubber hose. Smart I know. I told Marc he needs to have the fuel tank and lines cleaned and checked for leaks and that he probably has a bad fuel pump. We haven't had the fuel pressure tested at the rail as yet. I also told him he may need to replace the fuel injectors. The check engine light was on but went off by itself. It doesn't run well enough to have it checked for codes. I just thought it would be a good idea to get a more professional opinion before it heads to the shop. We live in Ohio so the weather has been in the teens to 30's. Marc loves the car, I guess I talked about the 89 Z that I bought new, too many times. Thanks for your help.

Mutt; Sounds like you are on the right track. The PCM should store codes regardless of how poorly it is running. Assuming, that the battery hasn't lost enough voltage to lose them. Definitely sounds like a fuel delivery problem.
Good luck..You are more than welcome to post the shop's diagnosis if you wish more opinions.
