i just put about of gallon and a half of gas in it when it ran out made it about a mile when it started to die again i pump and pumped the gas but it barely kept it running but it wouldn't move more than a crawl. and eventually just gave up, the check engine light is on as well, i think i might have a clogged fuel filter but don't know.
and to make it all worse for some reason i have a short that drains my battery even when the car is running the alt is fine had it checked a month ago. when the car is running it will drain the battery in less than 15 mins.
any ideas i got nothing

In tank fuel pumps are cooled and lubricated by the fuel in the tank. When you run a car out of gas, it pumps a lot of air through the pump which overheats it and causes some severe wear and many times, failure when they cool off.
You will need to use a fuel pressure gauge to verify this.
Also, pumping the throttle on a fuel injected car does absolutely nothing.

As far as the charging system problem goes you 1st need to have the battery tested to make sure it's capable of holding a charge. If the battery is ok then you need to retest the alt.
With the correct size alternator that is functioning properly, there is no draw on the system that could discharge the battery while the engine is running..... It's just not possible.

so if the pump fails what can i do to fix it? add more gas, replace the pump? and how do i prevent it from doing it again. its hard to not run the tank out because my fuel gages doesn't work and my odometer is off as well it tacks up a bit faster. the the battery drain with it running if it had bad connections either ground or otherwise.

You can run it out of gas as many times as you want as long as your prepared to replace the fuel pump at about $600 a pop every time you do it. If I were you I would fix my gas gauge instead and never let it go below 1/4 tank. Common sense would say that you would be more careful since your gauge doesn't work anyway.

what is the most likely reason the gage doesn't work and is there a way i can fix it myself for as little as possible

Locate the gauge wire at the tank (yellow with white) and jump it to ground. Turn the key on momentarily and if the gauge jumps to full, the sending unit in the tank is bad. If it doesn't, then the problem is in the dash or the wiring.
