1991 Dodge Dynasty, intermittently starts then suddenly dies. 3.3L / V6, automatic w/overdrive, No anti-theft, Sign In

1991 Dodge Dynasty, intermittently starts then suddenly dies. 3.3L / V6, automatic w/overdrive, No anti-theft, about 100,000 miles, nearly everything original under the hood. First time this happened pulling out of a parking spot, did not re-occur for about 10miles while slowing to a redlight. Next time was approx 200 miles later, several days later and maybe 20 starts later. it Shutdown then immediately restarted. somewhere after about 600 miles total driven since first shutdown it began to occur more frequently, and after various drive times/distances. Then a few days ago, 4 times on same day every initial start, plus after a few restarts. Then finally couple days ago the 4 th shutdown of the day at steady cruising speed of about 40 mph it shutdown and would not restart for hours, was towed. Car runs smooth/normal when it runs, never any other symptoms. Does not sputter, or run rough, or anything. Acts like the old vapor lock, or a bad distributor pickup(this car does not have a distributer, uses a coil pack). Only showed computer code 11 and 12, and only after the shutdowns had occurred roughly 30 times over an 8 week period of driving.
After getting the code 11, I changed the Crankshaft sensor, no improvement. Then changed the Camshaft sensor. Again no change. So now, since the tow/day it would not retart after 2 hours, it will not stay started most attempts, when it does run it runs smooth, but have not try to drive since sensor changes, The shutdown frequency remains unreliable. Other things I have checked; fuel pressure is around 40lbs before start, around 50 running, looked over wiring to sensors(did not electrical test). Have read a few posts regarding a Chrysler bulletin calling out an SBEC change because of an anti-theft shutdown bug.
Am asking if anyone knows of this SBEC being the problem, and/or upgrading it per the bulletin would solve it?
Am new to the forum, Thanks in advance, Murl

There is a TSB on start and stall, but it says nothing about the vehicle randomly stalling out while your coming to stops. Really don't know if that TSB would solve that issue because it seems that no one has sat down and figured out what goes missing when it dies. Another thing is for you to be confident in replacing an SBEC for something like that, you need to find out what is disabled to keep the engine from running when the theft system is activated.

For example: You find that the theft system disables the fuel pump. You don't want to replace the SBEC if you find that spark goes missing when the engine stalls out. Another thing to consider is why did this problem all the sudden show up at or around 100,000 miles? Doesn't make any sense.

Since we volunteer our time and knowledge, we ask for you to please follow up when a problem is resolved.

just saw your note, Thanks for trying. Here is where it is at now; just got it from a shop, was there 4 days. They researched fuel, did not explain why. They said fuel rail was clogged, but note; it ran like new when was running. Any time it was running. So, they said they fixed it cleaning fuel rail, but that it hesitated now(never did before). It died one block from their shop, restarted quickly & had a horrible hesitation, more like bucking & did not want to run. I drove it that way another block, it got a bit better, so went further, seems they may have driven gunk into the injectors. They did not want the car back, said they were done with it. Drove it home, seemed to get better, almost smooth running, parked it. An hour later would not start, seems to either be flooding now, or seriously out of time. Car is sitting 4 days now, will not start. Am plannin to to go back to square one, spark, fuel, timing etc., am not gonna do the SBEC just yet. While I look for a shop that won't argue with me about bulletins; they said they checked the bulletins, but would not even consider the anti-theft glitch to be a problem, and refused to run the simple 5 or 6 step process(DRB procedure) to check for it. Will post a solution if I find it Thanks Again

Shoot - that shop told you they are done and don't want the car back! Fine, then don't take it on in the first place IMO.

Back as that didn't work out obviously. Not running now at all! Check for where they were working for any evidence of something out of place and on to check fuel pressure and for spark while cranking and see what falls out. If fuel and it cranks starting fluid should fire it up for a few seconds so rule out ignition for now.

What to do now and not sure what this place did is chase down fuel delivery from tank to the rail and put in a new fuel filter just because if any pressure is found at all and was running then quitting the way you mentioned don't think it was that but I'm not convinced whatever was done didn't cause a new issue,
