my truck jumped time was able to adjust distributor and get it running but does this mean it's timing chain is about to break. and is it safe to drive without replacing the chain. it is a time chain if that makes any difference

Re: 1990 toyota pickup Sign In

if it jumped time it could be worn gear/gears or is it a timing belt driven...either way i would investigate what/why
etc....
i have seen guys years ago with chain/gear driven engines that would move all the spark plugs wires at the distributor cap in the direction of the rotor, usually one position back,to compensate for the timing and then it was easier to adjust distributor.....but in this case i would check ,especially ifs its belt driven....probably doesn't have long...
teeth on belt will shear off.....
if its gear driven, again need to check...not worth breaking down....cuz it nevers happens close to home, with me i
never have tow money with me and always ,i FORGOT MY PHONE......Crazy

I dont think the chain is in any danger of breaking, but I am not sure if the gears have plastic covers on them or not. If the gears have plastic on them, the gears will break off more and more. I would replace the timing set soon. All it will do is keep getting worse, and as Jim N has stated, it will break down somewhere that is not convient to you. Good luck. Click here for directions on timing chain.
