The backfiring tends to pint to an ignition/spark problem. It's getting plenty of fuel. That's what is fueling the backfire; ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ We offer help in answering questions, clarifying things or giving advice but we are not a substitute for an on-site inspection by a professional.

Just ideas: OK - I think they still sell mufflers that would be warranted for an burst like that - check. If you really know "wet" conditions are highly involved all parts (secondaries) that carry high voltage are suspect especially ones that can leak to another spark plug including wires, distributor (or packs if equipped) cap, rotor, coil etc. Many you can find or cause when it wouldn't happen by misting parts one at a time with slightly salted spray of water - I use plain window cleaner works great less mess for me. Some you can see spark jump some not but if it causes the issue that would be the area or item. Didn't look but think a cap and rotor set up if so blow it out carefully with compressed air inside. Not the most common but can just get dusty and dirty inside and that dirt misdirect a spark, then the backfire, T

You're going to be looking for something that is causing the spark to totally shut off and then suddenly trigger a spark. The fuel is continuing to build up without spark and then suddenly there is a random spark that ignites it to cause the backfire. Coils and/or ignition modules would be the number one suspects. ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ We offer help in answering questions, clarifying things or giving advice but we are not a substitute for an on-site inspection by a professional.

Better watch out. My Ranger has Duraspark and VTEC. If it wasn't for the Vortec traction control system, i'd be roasting the tires off. Since we volunteer our time and knowledge, we ask for you to please follow up when a problem is resolved.
