Ok 1990 Ford ranger 2.3, manuel trany I bought new and always maintained every 3000 miles. At 143,00 miles I started losing oil presure, I had it checked out best guess was clogged pick up screen. Best estament was 800.00 to pull engine and pan and clean screen. Or They would do complete overhaul for 2,200.00.Well for 1200 more I said yea just rebuild it. MY Ranger ran perfect for 10,000 then developed a strange problem. Right after filling up one day it started missing badly, I've had water in my gas before and it seemed to fit, so I got some Heet and some fuel system cleaner and octane booster it seemed to help so I continued to drive it till I could fill up again with good gas. To shorten this up a bit it did'nt work. Now I had plugs and wires replaced at rebuild time but I had to start somewhere so I replaced the plugs semmed to help but whithin 50 miles same thig. Now the plugs were just black and wet with the smell of raw gas like it was not burning correctly so I pulled the wires out of the coil pack and one of the holes where the wire goes in was all green with corrosion, I was told the coil was leaking and needed to be replaced. So new coil pack same thing, ran better for oh 50 miles or so then went back to the intermition missing proablem. At this time I was thinking Brain box, but according to my chilton's my ignition was controled by a ignition control module. Ok I replaced it, At first it really ran a lot better for 150 miles then it started the missing again. But still ran a little better than before. Oh I replaced th inline fuel filter also. I came to notice that generaly It seems to run fine for about 10 miles then starts acting up missing badly dyeing at stop lights, idle osalating up and down. Also It went from 22 miles to the gallon to 13-16 miles to the gallon. To me it seems like after it gets fully warmed up it stars running out of time, but my experence with auto repair is mainly befor the advent of computers. So my question is this does my ranger have a Brain box, engine control box or not. I checked with J.C.Whitney they say yes and want to sell me one for 400.00 but If my rig has one I can't find where it goes. Anyway any suggetions on how to fix would be helpfull, I don't have the money to take to a garage 90.00$ shop time Plus I already have a lot into car thats 21 years old. And by and large has always been very good to me and I love it. Thank you I will reply to suggestions.

Your truck does have a computer that controls fuel and ignition as well as other things. They normally don't fail so don't just replace it. Unfortunately without a proper diagnosis we will just be guessing and likely wasting your time\money. Take it to a reputable shop when you are able to.

So your saying I do have a Brain box. Ok well like I already asked where is it located I've looked everywhere on in the truck no luck finding it. Besides controling thr fuel and ignition, thats what that 140.00$ Ignition control module is supposed to do that I aready replaced.

You need to stop throwing parts at it and get it diagnosed properly. You're just throwing money away.

Its been my expirence that taking a car to a shop to have them diagnose a missing problem is throwing money away. First theres the 90.00$ shop time they'll nick you for atleest two hours then they will replace your plugs or wires another 100.00$ and tell you its fixed then you get down the road a few miles and the miss returns, and your back to square one. At lesest replaceing parts till you get the right one you get the benafit of new parts. Don't any of you have anything but take it to a garage? Really? Whats the point of this forum? Take it to the shop. That's all I hear.

What's the point in answering your questions? ..................You have no clue what you are doing or what we are talking about. Go right ahead and throw all the parts you want at it if you think you're just getting ripped off paying a knowledgeable tech to tell you what is wrong.

Hey, you said it only misses half the time. Just only drive the other half.
