1990 Toyota runs great but suddenly dies and wont start back up Sign In

I have a 1990 Toyota Pickup. It runs great. I was driving on the freeway when I began to slow down for a red light. The light turned green and when I shifted to a higher gear there was no power coming from the engine. It just suddenly died. I has 188,000 miles on it and is a 4 cylinder. Battery is good. Alternator is good. I checked the spark plug wires and one was burnt off on the spark plug. The next day I changed all the spark plug wires. I tried starting it and it started right up. I drove it around a bit and when I pulled back to my house and slowed down the engine lost power again, and wouldn't start back up. I noticed I have a small oil leak near the starter and the wires were getting oil on them. Could this have caused some kind of short that prevents in from starting back up? Why am I losing power all of the sudden when it is running great? Please help.

All "crank, no start" conditions are approached in the same way. Every engine requires certain functions to be able to run. Some of these functions rely on specific components to work and some components are part of more than one function so it is important to see the whole picture to be able to conclude anything about what may have failed. Also, these functions can ONLY be test during the failure. Any other time and they will simply test good because the problem isn't present at the moment.
If you approach this in any other way, you are merely guessing and that only serves to replace unnecessary parts and wastes money.

Every engine requires spark, fuel and compression to run. That's what we have to look for.

These are the basics that need to be tested and will give us the info required to isolate a cause.

1) Test for spark at the plug end of the wire using a spark tester. If none found, check for power supply on the + terminal of the coil with the key on.

2) Test for injector pulse using a small bulb called a noid light. If none found, check for power supply at one side of the injector with the key on.

3) Use a fuel pressure gauge to test for correct fuel pressure, also noticing if the pressure holds when key is shut off.

4) If all other tests are passed. then perform a complete compression test and record the results. All cylinders should be over 120lbs in most cases and all be within 10% of each other.

Once you have determined which of these functions has dropped out,
you will know which system is having the problem.

Thanks so much. I'll do that and get back the results. Much appreciated.

I thought I should mention that the truck has been sitting for 1 year. There hadnt been any fuel stabilizer added. Im looking into the pros and cons of either making a noid light or buying one. Any thoughts?

I don't know what your planning on making a noid light out of but you can't use an incandescent bulb. It has to be a low impedance diode. You can buy a noid light for under $10

If this has been sitting for a year, then you need to get every bit of fuel out of it, change the fuel filter and refill it with fresh fuel. Replace the battery and by now you have likely fouled the plugs and they will have to be replaced.

How do I get the fuel out of it? Just take off the fuel filter and let it drain? Do you think this could be a good indicator of the existing problem?

Thanks for your time man.

Removing the tank is about the only way to get all the fuel out. It will not siphon through the pump. Gas usually goes stale in less time than a year.

Is it hard to remove the tank? What do I need for the job and what should I be aware of when removing it?

It's not real bad on a lift but I wouldn't want to try it on the ground, especially if it has a lot of gas in it.

Re: 1990 Toyota runs great but suddenly dies and wont start back up Sign In

I ended up taking off the bed of the truck. It was only 8 bolts to disconnect it from the frame. I put in a new fuel pump, fuel filter, and that little fuel sock thing that attaches to the fuel pump. Changed a blown fuse to the EFI and it started right up. I added some Lucas Fuel and Injector cleaner to the gas tank and filled it up and drove it around. No problems.

Thanks for the advice and I hope this helps someone else.

I forgot to explain the reason I took off the bed of the truck was to access the fuel tank. The fuel pump was easy to pull out of the top of the fuel tank and change out. The fuel filter was a little more difficult to access being above the starter on the passenger side towards the middle of the engine. Hope this helps someone.

Yes, we frequently lift the beds for replacing fuel pumps on light pickups. I didn't suggest it for you because it doesn't make getting the fuel out any easier, just replacing the pump.

Thanks for posting back with the results.

Yeah luckily there wasn't much fuel in it so I took some cloth and had to stick it in there to eventually clean it all out. It took some time, and maybe it would have been easier to remove the whole tank, but at that point I was already doing what I was doing. Anyway, thanks alot.
