I have a 1988 Pontiac Firebird Trans AM V8 5.0 L. We originally bought it and was told that it only needed a timing chain that needed to be replaced; we replaced the timing chain, drove it around the block fine and right when we got back it died. We then took it to a repair shop for a diagnostic test, they said it was the Idle Air Control valve; we have them replace it, and then we drove it home from there (about 5 miles). When we went to start it again, we put it in park and it will start it, and it will die when shifted into drive. When shifted into drive, sometimes it will die right away or sometimes you can drive 10 feet. When shifted into reverse it will drive a little bit sometimes, but not all the time; and you have to give it extra gas as well.

You could have a partialy cloged fuel filter. Even if it isn't part of the problem, it is still normal maintainance and somthing often overlooked, also you may have cloged fuel injectors --------- easy and cheap to put some fuel injector cleaner in your tank. if that dosen't work try new plugs and dist. cap Crazy Hope that helps Goldfisch

There is nothing in a can that will make a car run when it won't start.
Your first step is to use a fuel pressure gauge and monitor the pressure during this problem.
If it's a TBI system, the pressure must be between 9 and 13PSI
If it's ported injection, then it needs to remain between 30 and 37PSI with the engine running or 40 and 47PSI with the key on, engine off.
