Hi

Ive got an old 1987 opel corsa, been having some problems with her and now the seem to be worse! Last night coming home from work the car stated to shudder, like it had dirty fuel, when i stoped at a trafic light it idled ok and then drove fine, this morning it started, started shuddering and also backfiring, the cut out, whern it starts it can sound fine, then it backfires a bit and cuts out...not very loudly but quite often at irregular intervals. Ive just checked the ignition points, cleaned the plugs, changed the plug wires and distributor cap, cleaned the roter and its still backfiring. The fuelfilter was changed about 2000 miles ago....sometimes on ignition i just get a click but i think thats the starter motor solenoid and has nothing to do with this problem.

so what i want to know is this, could thgis be a major problem like a timing belt?

can i rule out fuel pump problems?

do you think taht even thougth its a new fuel filter it could be dirty fuel and i can "drive it out"

can i still drive the car or is it just going to get worse?

Hmm? At a glance this seems like a valve timing problem and could be destructive to engine if belt or chain (if used) breaks or can jump too far.

This type of problem doesn't usually give you much or any advance warning. I'd rule out timing belt/chain issues right away,

T
