I have a 1987 dodge ramcharger and no matter how much i depress the gas pedal it won't accelerate. it is as though the gas pedal is only effective if pressed down 10%. I recently put half a tank of gas in it and I suspected that there was water in the pump so i added 1 STP fuel treatment and 1 drygas but it didn't help. The sparkplug wires look ok and are attached correctly. Do you think this is a fuel problem or electrical problem? By the way it is a slant 6, not sure what engine size.

'87? Carbureted or Injected? Does the engine seem to run smooth, but just no power? Can you take a vacuum reading? If so, measure vacuum at idle, then again at 2500 rpm. The reading should be as great or greater at 2500 than it was at idle. If not, could be restricted exhaust (plugged cat). Timing could be severely retarded.
Other possibilities. Give us as much info/symptoms as possible.

thanks for your reply. the vehicle in question is a 1987 dodge ramcharger-slant 6 with carburetor. only 89,000 miles. new alternator was installed last summer. the engine bucks very little it doesnt seem to have power at higher rpm's.

>>the engine bucks very little << Well, it shouldn't 'buck' at all. You should address the 'bucking' before getting too excited.Unsure

duchaine: Have you done that vacuum test Loren suggested yet? That's a neat way to test for exhaust restrictions and usually the converter is the weak link. May tick off the neighbors with the noise but you can loosen exhaust (AYOR) on many before the converter for a quick test to see it power is normal again,
