1987 Chevy s10 Problem of Dying in 4th gear Sign In

The Car : Chevy s10-Long bed 2-wheel drive/
Engine: 2.8 liter-Rebuilt engine
Year : 1987 (fuel injection) V6 - Manual Transmission (5 Speed)

Recently (2 months ago) my Trucks engine was rebuilt. I have encountered a nasty problem that makes the car dangerous to drive, When Gearing down from 5th to 4th gear. The car's Check Gages Light will come on and the Car will die (but will restart-with ignition from key turn), this will happen at odd time intervals and not always (not a day to day occurance). Car performs fine in 1st and 2nd gear and 3rd gear (will not die)

The Car will not die if you are Shifting up gear, This problem only happens when you are shifting down

These parts and adjustments have been added/Replaced and recalibrated)

Spark Plugs
Thermostat
MAP Sensor
Idle Air Control
Fixed Vaccum leak
2 adjustments to Engine Timing. The most recent one seems the best)
Transmission was rebuilt 50K before engine was rebuilt.

Note: Car has Worn Throttle Body and Plate - As pointed out by my mechanic. My question is : Could a worn Throttle plate and Body Cause the fuel injection to foul and Kill The engine? causing a Stall in 4th gear? Mechanic has also pointed out that the Truck does not want to hold with a steady Timing idle, Meaning the timing slips.

At first I thought it might be that the car was on its first 500 miles and that the computer control of the Car might be relearning how to work with an engine, but now I think it is something else. When I take my foot off the Clutch pedal I hear a whirling chain link kind of sound, when I tap my foot on the Clutch pedal it goes away! This isssue happened before the Truck even had its engine Rebuilt . I am wondering if this is connected? The Clutch does not appear stiff and no grinding is heard when shifting gears, The sound has not affected the Car's Drivabililty, but is curious.

Any help would be great
Thank you

Yes a worn throttle body, throttle shaft bushings, could give these symptoms; because false air could be entering the engine around the worn throttle shaft bushings. The PCM (computer) relies on a specific, consistent closed throttle air flow around the throttle plates. If at one too another closed throttle, there is a different amount of air; the PCM doesn’t know whether to pull the IAC motor open or closed to keep the engine running.
The erratic ignition timing could be due to a worn distributor causing the timing to bounce around. This in combination with the worn throttle could be adding up to the down shifting stall?
Before condemning anything else though, make sure that the minimum base idle and timing are set correctly; using the proper procedure(s) Also during the adjustments you may need to go back and forth between idle and timing, until they do not affect each other when adjusting one or the other.
Your description of the clutch noise; sounds like a clutch release bearing issue; likely nothing to do with the stalling?

Dan.
