My volvo stationwagon has been running smoothly until recently when a burning like smell came from somewhere under the hood while driving. Also, when accelerating at a stop sign or light, you can hear the engine rev up, but the car doesn''t move right away. This also occurs when i give it gas while in motion. It feels like i am switching gears in a manual car, but it is an automatic. Idea's, suggestion's???

thank you!

Plenty for age and miles so a first guess is something to do with PCV system which can cause erratic idle, vacuum loss or erratic and oils getting on hot exhaust making for odor.

Essentially I'd check for vacuum leaks and go from there with what found,

Sounds to me like you got a massiive trans fluid leak somewhere annd ran out of fluid. Check your trans fluid level and if it's low, find out where the leak is. It may be just one of the cooler lines going up to the radiator. The smell may indicate that it's leaking on to the exhaust pipe somewhere.
