1986 Mazda B2000 pickup Sign In

1986 Mazda B2000 pickup will not start.

2.0L, 4 cylinder, Gas

On the interstate I noticed a puff of blue smoke behind the truck. I then looked and noticed the heat guage on full hot.

I kicked it out of gear and shut it down and coasted a mile and turned it back on until I got back up to speed and shut it off and coasted again until I got to the next exit. I then heard a loud pop. It appears this was a radiator line that split.

I shut it down ... removed the thermastat and replaced the line and fluid.

The truck now will not crank. When turning it over it only puffs, will not crank.

Head gasket blown? What do I need to check?

If I need to replace the engine do I get a rebuilt or remanufactured? Who is reliable to buy one from?

It does kinda sound like the head gasket.
Do a cooling system pressure test and a compression test.
PS: I personally own a 87 B-2000.

Let us know hoe those tests go.

Will do. Bought this Mazda new in nov. 1985. Been a great truck and thats was the first time it has failed to get anyone who was driving it, home. In the last 2 years I have just about replaced everything. New radiator, new trans, new clutch, new catalytic converter and EGR, new rotors and brakes and exhaust system.

Probably just go ahead and put in a new remanufactured engine and be done with it. Then I'll start looking at a new paint job. I'll just keep until it becomes a classic .

Here in my state (Delaware) a car/truck that's 1987 or older you can get inspected as a classic car, This means as long as you the own the car in Delaware it never has to be re inspected.
Plus insurance is real cheap too (like $230 a year).

Being an old car with a classic registration does not make it a CLASSIC Tongue

I couldn't agree more!
But, it makes my cheap beater cheap to insure.Wink
Real classics to me have to be atleast older then 1975.
60's and older are my favorite years for classic cars.

Re: 1986 Mazda B2000 pickup Sign In

Well I wish you were around here. I am in NC. The fellow I have in mind ran his own shop for many years but now is retired. I dont think he is still certified either but I still like to pay a fair price.

I did get a reman engine, carburetor and starter. Everything else will be new. The starter I last replaced 6-7 years ago so figured why not replace. The carburetor has been needing replacing for a long time. The Mazda place wanted 1600$ for a new one and that did not include installation. I did look at the Weber and few other new relacement carbs but from what I had heard from others the best carburetor for that engine is the stock one that comes with it. So I just got a rebuilt one. That was still 400$. I will have $4000 in this engine replacement bye the time I am through. eeek

How is the rest of the truck?
Must be pretty darn nice to spend that kinda cash on it.
