1985 s10 4.3 carb, 80k runs, but wont idle Sign In

Hello,
I have a great looking 1985 s10 pickup 4.3 carburated with 80,000 miles. I worked at General Motors and special ordered the truck. It was a limited production. I didnt want the 2.8 lol. I use it rarely. It has always run great. Last week it wont idle. I can jump in set the choke, push pedal down several times and for over 20 years runs and idles great, but now as soon as I let my foot off the gas pedal...It stalls everytime. It wont idle at all. As long as my foot is on the gas pedal, it runs smooth. Help....

I don't see a 4.3 listed for an S-10 -- are you sure? 2.8 had a carb that suked big time.

Seems the up front problem is probably a vacuum leak. Suppose it wouldn't hurt to clean carb or throttle body if somehow a 4.3 is in this thing with a carb or what looks like one is fuel injected but wasn't listed as said in my look up?

They never made a 4.3 with a carb and they didn't put them in 85 trucks..

Hello,
I worked for General Moters and special ordered the truck. In 85 they did have a limited production, It is 100 percent s10 with 4,3 with carb. stock from the factory. I have not changed anything. Not that many were made. I can take pics. But not sure why it wont idle now. I jump in and set the choke by pushing the pedal down a couple times and it starts up and when I let off of the gas, it stalls everytime. Done the same thing for over 20 years,
Any help is appreciated.
Thanks
John

Pull the EGR valve off and see if it is stuck open or receiving vacuum at idle.

Hammer Time, You just reminded me of something. We (General Motors) had a huge problem with EGR valves, carbon build up. Because of the expense of the valve, we had dealerships try cleaning them with carb cleaner. It would clean some of the carbon out, but it was not a fix.
Thanks for bringing that up.
I will check it tomorrow.

There's nothing expensive about an EGR so don't know where you got that idea. If all clogged up or leaking it sure is a problem. Hose could swell up, not seal tight too. Alone a cheap fix but caused by neglect IMO.

BTW - a 4.3 is pretty much a Chev 350 with two cylinder cut off so not totally some new invention even if a special order for this year so be it. Do check it, clean it and make sure it has vacuum as suggested and while poking around check that it isn't the or the only problem if bad. Hoses don't generally hold up well that long from new even with all care along the way,

No, What I said was, make sure it does not have vacuum at idle.

He knows what he's looking for.

OK - This is spot for trouble as said. Why this is hard I don't understand. PCV is $2.99, grommet the same and hose by the foot so simple it's nuts not a dealer needed something.

It would be a problem if so called "carboned up" and never should be and was NOT a problem unless caused by something else but still have to fix that up and move on as needed.

This engine is listed for use in C-10s of same year and probably identical. Not sure but showed a VIN code "6" for the engine,

I don't know what a PCV has to do with and EGR valve.

Re: 1985 s10 4.3 carb, 80k runs, but wont idle Sign In

Total brain phart on my part, sorry. I was thinking PCV as a cause of not idling first not the acronym so simple. Right that EGR should show no vacuum at idle. PCV grommet and hoses did plain rot, swell on about anything at age and too easy not to check or fix.

Low mile quite old just thinking of the likely stuff. EGR on the list only if vacuum is present and not the fault of the EGR if so IMO.

Tons of vacuum hose and temp sensing trees on this vintage to go wrong, break etc. If in this decent of shape should show on a sticker on radiator support or fan shroud the vacuum routing, and engine specs if all OE and still can be read. Almost can't be original hoses that had colored stripes to identify them, T
