help! after moving a friend, i noticed the temperature gauge rising unusually fast. stopped and checked oil, which i had checked before starting, to find a brown frothy liquid. called my mechanic. he told me sounds like a blown head gasket a $1500.00 repair can i drive it to the mechanic? he hasn't seen it yet is it worth fixing? is $1500 a reasonable price? any advice would be greatly appreciated steve sjkokinis@aol.com los angeles

$1500.00 is at the top end for this repair but not totally out of line. As for driving it I don’t suggest it; coolant and oil don’t make for a good lubricant. There’s already a chance that the main and rod bearings have been damaged? The sad part is there’s only two ways of telling if there is damage. One is too throw the dice and do the head gaskets in the hope they survived; the other is to have the mechanic drop the oil pan and inspect the bearings. With the age of this truck he’s likely going to find wear regardless of the head gasket blowing; which may not have given you any trouble but now that they been disturbed they will want attention. As in replacing, which means pulling the engine to have the crankshaft polished and while you’re there, ect ect ect. It’s kind of like a snowball rolling down hill; it keeps getting bigger the farther it goes. Now is it worth it I don’t know, how much do you want this truck? What I would do if you were my customer is a complete inspection of the vehicle, front suspension, steering, brakes, transmission, then body, frame the whole truck. After that you can stand back and make an educated choice. Is it worth it or not. Dan. Canadian "EH"
