1980, Toyota Pickup engine fails after 20min of driving Sign In

1980
Toyota
Pickup
2.2L
75,000Mi

This truck has served me well. Just recently I have returned home from a 2 year leave. My younger sibling was driving the truck on the highway and hit a pot hole. From 45-50MPH the truck shakes, We believe the it wheels just need to be realigned. This isn't the problem though, (I listed this in case it may've been related to the problem).

While driving down the highway at about 60MPH, The engine RPM shot down, It felt as if i was put into neutral. I ensured the truck was in 4th gear (highest) and pushed on the gas until I was getting some tug(Much higher RPM). I stopped the truck pushing on the gas would cause an increase in RPM but it would drop back down to nearly idling while the throttle was still engaged. In order to keep the car moving at 20MPH I have to push on the gas for a sec, let off when the RPM dropped again then push on the gas again. I left the truck parked overnight then the next day it was back to running normally. The next time I had to drive for over 20 minutes the same thing happened.

Any ideas for finding out what the problem is or how to repair it would be very much appreciated. Thanks in advanced.

-Bryce

Alignment isn't going to do anything for your shaking. You likely bent something, probably a wheel.
As for the engine problem, the first thing I would do is hook up a fuel pressure gauge and test the fuel pressure and make sure it at spec.

I'll check the fuel pressure, the one thing that makes me think that's not the problem is that the engine starts to act up after it heats up.

You have to rule things out one at a time. Plugged exhaust would be next on the list.

Ok, I would just like to know what to check for when we recreate the problem. Recently we had the exhaust manifold, tailpipe and muffler replaced so it's unlikely that that's the problem. Thanks for your assistance!

You didn't replace the Cat and that's what would be plugged. If you don't think my suggestions are valid, then i won't waste any more time here.

Sorry if I sound unappreciative or questioning in any way. I very much appreciate your help. I just wanted to know all the possible causes of the problem so that we can check each in one setting. Thank you again we'll look into the fuel pump and the catalytic converter and get back to you.

Ok, so We had the fuel pump and Fuel filter replaced. The truck started up much more quickly. We drove for a few days and everything was running great but driving down the highway it once again malfunctioned. As always it will start running after a few hours rest. For the past month we've been just using it as a city car and it's been doing fine. But I need it running at highway speeds again. So We had the exhaust manifold rebuilt, the tail pipe replaced. We don't have a catalytic converter, what would you say would be the next probable cause? I've driven it on the highway multiple times before it acts up. It will randomly stop running correctly. Thanks again for the help.

Re: 1980, Toyota Pickup engine fails after 20min of driving Sign In

All "crank, no start" conditions are approached in the same way. Every engine requires certain functions to be able to run. Some of these functions rely on specific components to work and some components are part of more than one function so it is important to see the whole picture to be able to conclude anything about what may have failed. Also, these functions can ONLY be tested during the failure. Any other time and they will simply test good because the problem isn't present at the moment.
If you approach this in any other way, you are merely guessing and that only serves to replace unnecessary parts and wastes money.

Every engine requires spark, fuel and compression to run. That's what we have to look for.

These are the basics that need to be tested and will give us the info required to isolate a cause.

1) Test for spark at the plug end of the wire using a spark tester. If none found, check for power supply on the + terminal of the coil with the key on.

2) Test for injector pulse using a small bulb called a noid light. If none found, check for power supply at one side of the injector with the key on.

3) Use a fuel pressure gauge to test for correct fuel pressure, also noticing if the pressure holds when key is shut off.

Once you have determined which of these functions has dropped out,
you will know which system is having the problem.

Re: 1980, Toyota Pickup engine fails after 20min of driving Sign In

It still runs just poorly and intermittent at that - right? How much use did it get for the two years? If VERY little or near none fuel could be an issue or even the fuel tank. Guessing because of the age. Carb engine, may not have come with a converter from new - some didn't depending on several things. Leaded fuel was still in use and some vehicles exempt.

It behaved with the new pump and filter for a while so I think (all guesses) fuel itself and or dirt in tank is excessive. For less than $10 bucks I'd toss the fuel filter and examine the other even though so new. You may find it fairly loaded with junk already and may run well for a while again if so with a new one and do it again.

If that works for a while and I said "IF" then I'm blaming the gas tank or perhaps the pickup sock that should be in there definitely if the old/new filter is already catching dirt.

Clean the carb just because. Low miles or not it's old. Other is it wasn't designed to tolerate ethanol well that I think is in widespread use in many places and I think all of the US. Where is this truck and where was it parked and how - garage or outdoors?

So far if you can't quick check things while it's happening I tend to think you have a fuel issue but again I'm guessing,

It didn't get driven all that much when i was gone, a couple thousand miles at the most. I had set completely stationary for months at a time. It's lived in Utah for a couple years but in Texas for the rest. I'll check out the filter and get back to you.

Those locations explain why it still exists at all. Where I am - MA these rusted so fast (much faster than everything does anyway) there aren't any around at all. With the sitting history fuel is even more of a concern to concentrate on.

Take a sample in a clear glass. If it looks like iced tea or foul odor that's not good. Seems that you've put some use on it though and no doubt more and more gas so may not show anything with a test. Filter may though as said,
