HI what i have is a 1974 chevy pick up with a good wrench 350 in it with approx 78,000 miles on it. The vehicle starts perfectly and runs quietly every time but when i press on the excellarator the engine starts knocking loudly. Any ideas would be greatly appreshated.

Just thoughts: Great year for the engine. Last "leaded" fueled 350 and that's amazingly low miles - do you believe that? You need to figure out what the knock really is. The leaded engines used to build up carbon (actually lead deposits) rather quickly when just poke around town type use. Either way is MIGHT be way to high on compression because of carbon build up and this is fuel knock which could be loud or one in a while I've found some very low mile engines that the carbon built up enough to make engine bearing type knocks with piston actually touching the head - unseen. That's a hard knock as the gasoline is more of a ping knock. Try to figure which type it sounds like for some possible solutions. If the highest octane fuel you can get stops it then I'll suggest some ideas and would with the carbon knock but that's a bit rare, T
