When the engine is cold, the choke is partially closed, causing a rich condition. As the engine warms, the choke opens. If you have a vacuum leak, it creates a lean condition which will cause a backfire. Check all vacuum connections. Check the EGR valve (could be stuck open via carbon?) Make sure your point dwell is 30 degrees and timing set to specs.
