1000 miles/coil! '94 Jeep Grand Cherokee	Sign In

I'm posting on behalf of a friend who has a high mileage '94 Jeep Grand Cherokee.

It has blown through 5 coils in the last year. It will just quit. Replacing the coil always fixes the car. At $40/coil it is getting expensive.

How and why is this happening, and I'm open to suggestions that might help solve this problem!

Check/replace the spark plug wires/coil wire.Any arcing on a old spark plug wire and/or coil wire will cause carbon tracking and can cause a new coil to fail.Arcing at the coil tower will cause the wire to carbonize and take out the coil.
If they haven't been replaced in a while,i would toss 'em and install a new set along with a new set of spark plugs.

ALong with Jim's advice, look for a weak ground to the coil. As Jim stated, bad wires or plugs can cause the coil to work too hard to produce enough voltage to push the current through.

I also agree with above along with chunking the Autozone garbage and buying either a factory or AC Delco replacement. I have had the same trouble with this type of car when installing lower quality coils. Spend a few more dollars on a good one and be done with it.
