06 Focus, good battery but starter and eng dead Sign In

2006 Ford Focus, 175K. My daughter was driving slowly up a hill, gravel road rough, approx 20 mph. Car quit so suddenly it started to roll backwards. Ignition is completely dead now, but battery is good and all fuses seem good including power distribution fuses under hood, all aux circuits like light, stereo, door locks, horn, etc. work good. Anybody have any idea what would cause this? thanks

Which engine? Automatic or manual transmission?

Can you elaborate on what you mean by ignition is completely dead? You have no power to the ignition system?

Have you connected a scan tool up to see if you can communicate with the engine controller and check for stored trouble codes?

Re: 06 Focus, good battery but starter and eng dead Sign In

I am not sure wich engine, as I don't have car with me as I am writing this. It is a 4 cyl, front wheel drive, auto trans. When I try to start the car the starter does not engage, the soleniod does not even "click". Although, in the ignition switch itself, accessory works to turn on the radio or the wipers, etc. I have not had a scope on it. I was hoping that the problems with eng quiting while driving, and the car not turning over, that there was some type of relay or soleniod that I could check before taking it in to a mechanic. thx

The engine is either 2.0L or 2.3L.

The starter motor relay's ground control is operated by the PCM. You need a scan tool to check for codes and to see if the PCM is communicating. You'll also need a volt meter and electrical schematics to diagnose your problem. Gotta start with something or else your guess is good as mine.

there is little red lock with a car light on the cluster if its flashing with the key in the on position you have security issues or PCM communication issues. Another sign of PCM/power issues is seeing dashes where your milage usally shows up.. Check you battery clamps make sure they are tight and clean. Put a charger on the battery anyways for a while and see if that works.

If it's not battery/charing issue you will need to take it in and get it checked out
