Purchased an 04 Taurus with OHV 3.0 that had been sitting up for almost a year due to bads transmission. Replaced transmission and suddenly car started running terribly and was diagnosed with no compression on 1 3 5. Took valve cover off and all intake lifters had disentegrated. Replaced all the lifters and car ran well till I drove it down the road for about 10 miles then started bucking and bogging out. Motor eventually dies but restarts almost immediately and runs strong for another mile or so... Codes are 0132...0174...2196...071...091...2197... It was also discovered the cars gas had turned to varnish but has been replaced along with fuel filter

I would start with double checking the work again to make sure there isn't any pinched wires. A pinched O2 wire can really make an engine do some weird stuff & throw alot of codes. Run a compression test again to make sure everything is fine there.
There the majority of the codes are O2 codes.. I'm assuming you meant P0171 and guessing P0191 not 071 & 091.
considering it sat so long I would definitely clean the MAF as well....
After everything checks out I would run the KOEO, KOER tests to see what codes come up..... Clear everything and drive it again, whatever comes back needs to be traced down....
Considering it's been sitting the grounds really need to be looked at pretty close as well.. The fuel pressure needs to be checked and if possible run on fuel injection cleaner with the fuel system disabled to see if that has any effect on how it runs.....

The codes were 071 and 091 indicating the fuel mixture was too lean on both banks. I assume the compression is OK since it runs great until it pops a code and this only happens once it warms up. I drove it from a cold start and it took about 15 minutes of normal driving before the check engine light came on and the problem immediately started. I unplugged the MAF sensor and that made no difference. Since the O2 codes were being given since before the lifters were replaced, could the sensors be the cause of this problem. Do they regulate fuel flow and if they are sending the wrong signal could that possibly starve the fuel to the engine..I cleared the codes and drove the car and the 071 and 091 codes were the first to come back up.

While it's probably not the problem, it's always best to double check the engine condition 1st, I've been bitten a few times looking past that too quickly. I really doubt thats the problem but with it sitting for so long and the previous lifter problem I wouldn't be assuming anything at this point...
All OBD II codes are 4 digits.... I didn't see those anywhere. If that is an actual code the PCM is setting, they would be a P0071 & P0091.... A P0171 is a lean bank 1 code, very common & you usually see it with a P0174 (lean bank 2). So you might want to double check those code numbers..
Normally if you unplug the MAF & it's causing the problem it will make a difference on how it runs, good or bad. A bad MAF will make a system run very lean. If the fuel trims are way positive at idle & high rpms combined with a baro reading of 150 hz or less, the MAF is definitely bad and causing a lean condition but wouldn't account for all the O2 codes just the P0171 & P0174. Normal MAF reading would have the fuel trims close to zero, a baro reading of 159hz (if you are at sea level) or 29 in hg but I prefer frequency because it's more accurate.
You know you have a lot of different things going on so it's really hard to pinpoint a starting point on this one....It's been sitting for a while, it had bad gas, it's had the trany R&R'd, it's had engine mechanical problems......
Just by all the codes that keep coming back really suggests a shorted or pinched wire.....I just recently had 06 Escape some varmint chewed thru one wiring harness. This came in running horrible and it was throwing 5 different codes for different sensors, none of which were bad...
Personally I think I would verify the mechanical condition really quick with a relative compression check and then start looking for a pinched or shorted wire but before that I would definitely clean the MAF with the MAF cleaner to see if it would make any kind of difference in the running or readings..........

You are right of course the codes are 4 digits. The mechanic who did the work is supposed to pick the car up today and check it again. If the problem is something he did he says no charge but I am afraid it will of course be unrelated to his work. I think this car may just be cursed. Thanks

Yea, that is an problem with cars that sits. Sometimes a lot of systems starts to fail one right after another once it gets back on the road again.... Sitting can be harder on a vehicle than one the gets used regularly.
I don't remember on this one but I think it was only a year or 2?... That's a little early for the "failure bug" to start biting, but not out of the ball park..

Finally decided to drop the tank although the pressure read fine. Once I opened the tank I found the inner lining had begun to come apart and chunks about the size of a thumb were floating all through the gas. The pump filter was sucked shut and glazed over. I replaced the tank, filter, pump and flushed the system with a pint of Sea Foam. The car now runs great

Glad to hear you got it running.....Thx 4 taking the time to come back & let us know what the problem was....
Hopefully the "sitting" problems are behind you and you can get back to the normal everyday failures.....
Those are usually a bit easier to track down....
