04 Taurus - Exhaust lifters disentegrated

I have an 04 Taurus that has been running extremely bad. I took it to three mechanics who diagnosed the problem and repaired per their diagnosis, all with no results. Finally the fourth mechanic went beyond reading a meter and checked the compression finding there was no compression on the first bank of cylinders. After removing the valve cover he discovered that the exhaust lifters had disentegrated or fallen apart. What could have caused this and should I be concerned about any parts of the lifters that cannot be recovered. Any opinions or suggestions will be appreciated
