04 Sebring - Misfire & O2 Sensor Malfunction

2004 Chrysler Sebring Coupe
2.4L L4 DOHC 16V

145000 miles


Started having problems with it over a year ago with rough idling/loss of power/acceleration. Then the service engine light came on. Before that I noticed I was losing coolant, but there was no sign of a leak. Nothing on the ground or in the oil. Had to refill the overflow tank almost once a month. AC still cools, but blows hot all the time when it's off, but I think that's a stuck vent cover? Engine compartment temp gauge never really goes above the middle.



I live in North Carolina where you have to pass inspection to renew your registration, but I can't pass with the service engine light on. The error code they pulled the first time was P0302 - Cylinder #2 Misfire. I checked the spark plugs and the one in cylinder # was covered in oil. I replaced all the spark plugs about six months ago and it ran a little better, but not much. Forgot to check the coolant and when I finally did it was very low again. I refilled it and added a leak stopper this time to the coolant and the oil. The coolant seemed to stop leaking after that, but I noticed there seemed to be oil in the coolant now. I also added a fuel additive again, which helped before, but this time it seemed to make it worse. The engine sounds different now (more muffed? Lower pitched hum) and it wants to cut off when accelerating from a stop. Took it to a mechanic about 2 months ago and he said it's probably a blown head gasket or cracked head. Friend thought it was a broken piston ring.


I do have a error code reader for the car and last I checked it was throwing:


P0302 - Cylinder #2 Misfire Detected
P0135 - Oxygen O2 Sensor Heater Circuit Malfunction (Bank 1, Sensor 1)


Note: Battery and battery cables are almost brand new.


Here's the deal, I need to pass inspection in less then a week now or I probably wont have any means of transportation. I don't really have the money at the moment for large repairs or a new car, but I will in about a month.


Could replacing the oxygen sensor possibly fix the service engine light? Turing off that light is my main priority right now so I can at least pass inspection to give me more time to fix this or get another car.

well, first of all i would have to agree with what sounds like a blown head gasket or cracked head. i have a 96 caddy deville at our shop that runs and drives great, was ready to sell it, but it kept overheating, noticed coolant kept disappearing, but not onto the ground...
head gasket.

what does your exhaust look like? my guess is you have some amount of white or gray smoke out of your exhaust? perhaps not, but its common, and could be related to the o2 issue.

as far as the o2 sensor goes, that would cause a check engine light, but so would the misfire. both will likely have to be dealt with to pass inspection with no CEL. o2 sensors are easy to replace generally. you just have to figure out which one.
bank one sensor one SHOULD be, according to what i find, the one before the cat, on the manifold closest to the firewall. you should be able to call up either an auto store or a dealer and get an answer as to which it is. universal o2 sensors are cheaper, but not necessarily a good idea. people give mixed reviews.
i have a suspicion that your head gasket issue may be related to your dead o2 sensor. coolant getting into your combustion could kill it. as well as your catalytic converter.

as for the misfire, it could be caused by a nasty spark plug that needs to be replaced, or it could be a result of improper gapping, or a bad plug wire, etc. start small. pull the plug out, look it over, if it looks clean then check the gap. test for spark (will require a second person to crank while you check for spark against the block). if you have spark, it could be a valve problem or an injector problem on that cylinder. but spark plug seems more likely.

let us know what you discover!

oh, not to be a negative nancy, but its possible that with coolant burning and mixing with your exhaust that even without a CEL it may not pass emissions.. just a forewarning! you can try some kind of stop leak additive to at least try to get you through and passed. depends how bad it is

I refilled it and added a leak stopper this time to the coolant and the oil.

To you and the guy who posted after I have this to say

NEVER EVER EVER EVER EVER ADD THE GOD DAMN STOP LEAK TO ANY PART OF YOUR CAR!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

If this crap worked the parts store would be a ten foot tent with racks of bottles. The only fix for a leak is parts. You may have an engine problem but I see no mention of this being pressure tested. If you refuse to let anyone diagnose this then buy good shoes and enjoy walking. Stop leak doesn't ever seal permanently any leak, but it clogs heater cores and head everytime. I've torn off heads thinking it was a head gasket to find the coolant ports plugged with that crap and they put it in for a $200 radiator leaking. Cost them over a grand because of their $7 miracle cure.

Drop what you are doing and flush your cooling system NOW!!!!!!!!!!!! You also said you put some jumk in your oil and I want to know what it is.

Screw inspections, thanks to a couple bottles of that crap you may need a new car anyway.
