04 Ford Mustang Need Help!

04 Ford Mustang Need Help! Sign In

I have a 04 Ford Mustang GT 4.6V8
Recently I have been having some issues with it and need some help please!


When not in idle my car now makes this gurgling sound and then acts like its going to die and sometimes it has.
I have now spotted a leak of some sort on the left side of the engine by the 1st Ignition coil and injector.
I smell a coolant like smell but it does not leak any at all.


Im really at a loose here if someone could help me that would be great THANKS!

If you recognize the odor of coolant boiling or burning than pressure check this cooling system now as I think you are overheating and don't know you really are low on coolant or air in the system but can look OK at a pressure recovery tank which this must be. Either way the leak could be slow enough to burn off and not drip and if system doesn't hold pressure it also might not return coolant from the tank where you check level. It might be just burning it off slowly and should show on your gauges that it's hot or at least try your heater when this happens and if it blows cool/cold air with full heat request you know there's a problem with coolant,

It does not over heat at all.
And the leak it does have is more of an oil.

Check all fluids known now. Find out what is leaking, why and onto what that could be making it stall or you said. Fuel leaking should be distinct to you and maybe you might find engine oil too full and smells of oil.


I can't find it from here and if you can't get help with someone who can identify what is leaking and what it's effecting via codes too taken if it stalled it must have one pending at least,

#1 is on the right side of the engine. Pull the coil out and see if the spark plug well is full of whatever you think is leaking.

If your smelling coolant, you have a leak. As Tom suggested pressure test the cooling system when the engine is cold and look for leaks. Wouldn't be surprised if the intake is leaking.

Well I took it apart and there is a crack on the Upper Intake Manifold. But also it is fairly rusty and I only use coolant in it. What are some reason that this happens??


Now how difficult is it to replace this manifold?

? I thought most intakes on this were plastic of all things and not sure what is rusted, the coolant or what but if it's cracked it's got to go.


Did you mean only use coolant in that you use pure concentrate instead of a 50/50 mix? Don't do that if you mean that. Coolant alone is a lousy heat exchanger and must have water mixed in. If anything it would cool better slightly weaker mix but should be designed for 50/50 mix.


That alone unless it was running hot for a long time probably isn't the reason but don't do that. Read container it should say not too do that,

The intake is plastic except for the coolant runner. The factory intake gaskets are plastic too.

Dorman makes a replacement intake kit that we use a lot on the Stangs, Vics, and Marquis. Ford Gold coolant looks like rust when it dries and stains on the hot engine.

Don't know your abilities, but for a pro they are simple to do. You don't have to worry about dropping junk down in a lifter valley, but you have to be sure you don't drop stuff down into the runners in the heads. I always clean off using compressed air around the intake, so stuff doesn't fall off down in the spark plug wells or runners when you remove the coils and intake. The only special tools you'll need is torque wrench and fuel line disconnect tool.

If it needs a tune up, that would be a good time to do it while you have all that stuff out. Replace the coil boots and use motorcraft spark plugs. Double check the runners with a flash light and mirror before you reinstall the intake.

There are probably plenty of videos and information on the web on how to do them.
