My 2003 grand prix makes a very loud ticking sound when it is running cold. The ticking almost sounds like it is out of oil(but its not, just did an oil change). This problem was going on for while before but i did an oil change and it went away, so i thought i would try it again, but it did not help this time. When the car warms up, it purrs like it should. I dont know what it is but it sounds horrible. I just dont understand why it goes away when the engine warms up. I could use any help Kevin

?? What engine for starters? Also - since it went away once, what type and grade (viscosity) of oil was used, what's in there now, what temps is the car exposed to for what you call "cold?" Keep going with more info: Miles on car/engine. Oil pressure reading ok and fast at start up? T

Hey thank you for your time. The car has a 3.8 super charged engine. when i wrote the first note earlier today i had only started the car once on a cold engine. But we have started it twice since and both times were on a very cold engine. Now it it runs like a top. last time this happemed i did the oil change and the problem went away instantly. this time it didnt sound better till the second time i started it cold. I used 5 w 30 high miliage. The problem seems to have gone away. I will assume its because the oil change, but i have never heard of that. My oil level on the old oil was good the whole time. I am starting to wonder if i have to do an oil change ever 4 thousand kilometers to stop the awful ticking.( I usually do an oil change every 4 - 5 thousand kilometers any way, I just never heard of oil breaking down like this)

Just to answer some of your questions The engine is a 3.8 supercharged with 230 000 kilometers when i start the engine cold, its usually below freezing by a couple of degrees i have been using castrol gtx highmileage 5 w 30 since the last oil change, the problem is gone. I guess it must be the oil breaking down or something. I have never heard of this problem thank you for your time

Kevin; Sounds like it is taking time for the lifters to 'pump up' when they're cold. Next time you change oil, you may want to switch to a good synthetic oil. I've seen lifter problems in these engines before, but you may be able to put lifter replacement off for a while if you can get the noise under control. I use Amsoil in both of my vehicles for that exact problem. Just a thought. Loren SW Washington

Agree with Loren on this now with the added info. Quality synthetic should solve the issue and I'll add to that to avoid the "high mileage" designation as I think that tends towards a thicker concoction despite what viscosity numbers state. Almost anything with some miles take a tad longer when cold to get flowing and I swear by synthetics that they are much truer to their original intended values over the conventionals. None last forever so change on a schedule. Added note: I'm one to try assorted brands even within the synthetics which I use for everything. Do make a habit of filling the oil filter as much as is practical for the angle it's installed before installing to reduce time with zero lube when started the oil filter fills first before engine gets its share. Another note: I seems that switching oils (any type to any type or brand) has a tendency to consume some the first time out and will stabilize when same is used again - just an observation with my own and much older vehicles. DO CHECK YOUR OWN OIL BY DIPSTICK with regularity and don't rely on warnings now common like "check oil level" lights etc. It gets confused as to which means you are in big trouble or if you just need to check level. Check the level yourself even if there's no history of consumption do check it. It's not the end of the world to use some in between changes so don't freak out but do pay attention. I'll even add 1/2 quarts! Good luck, T
