02 protege starting trouble. cam shaft sensor? Sign In

So on occasion, i have extreme trouble starting my car. It will crank and crank but wont start up. I finally can get it going by pumping the gas petal a bunch of times while cranking the engine. (or by rolling her down a hill and popping the clutch, in which case it starts without hesitation). I got a cam shaft position sensor error a few times when i got the car going via pumping the gas pedal, so i inspected the sensor. Took it out and cleaned it. magnet is working. However I did discover that while the engine is running, if I tap on the sensor the engine will chug and, sometimes, completely die. Should this happen if the sensor is tapped? Is this causing the problem with my starting? I was first thinking the fuel pump.. but now am not sure. Any insight would be awesome! Thanks,

Kyle

First understand that pumping the throttle on a fuel injected car does absolutely nothing.
Is the check engine light coming on at all?

Doesn't pumping the gas petal adjust the air intake or something like that? I promise, if i just crank the engine it will never start.. pumping the petal is the only thing that gets it to kick over.

I got a cam shaft position sensor code a few times, but not all the time.

Opening the throttle and allowing more air into the engine can sometimes have an effect but the act of pumping does nothing at all.

so do you think the cam sensor should be replaced then if tapping on it lightly causes the engine to stall?

Most definitely should be replaced although you won't know if it's all your problems or not until you change it.
