02 Taurus Engine Light Stayed on After Replacing Ignition Coil?? Sign In

2002
Ford Taurus SES
144,000 miles

My emission systems light, which is also my check engine light, came on the other day. The car was acting normal & driving fine. I took it to Advanced Auto Parts to have it scanned & diagnosed. They said that it was a misfire on cylinder 1 & I bought a new BWD ignition coil & had it replaced. My engine light remained on after installing the new coil.
I called the store back & asked if that was normal or if something else was wrong. The guy said that it is normal for it to stay on for a bit & that the light should turn off after about 20 start ups & a few good drives...

Just so I have peace of mind, is it true that it should stay on for that long before going off, or do I need to have it checked again for something else??

If you can't even tell if the car is still misfiring, I suggest you have it checked by a competent shop.

I couldn't tell that it was misfiring in the first place. It was starting/driving/acting normal & the light just came on.
What am I supposed to look for to know if it's misfiring or not?

The engine computer identified a misfire that should have been very noticeable. If you didn't know it was misfiring in the first place, you can't know if it's fixed or not. You can have the code cleared and see if it comes back but it really should be looked at by a professional.
