I have a 02 Nissan Maxima SE 3.5L 6sp which I purchased used in Dec 09 with 116K miles on it now. Since then I had both o2 sensors and a variable valve timing solenoid replaced. Everything runs fine except when I start the car warm without my foot on the gas the car will sputter and most times die. I have no problem starting the car cold. I also feel some hesitation when driving. Its not as peppy as it was when I got it just 3 months ago. While having the timing solenoid replaced I mentioned the hesitation to the mechanic and he cleaned the MAF. that helped with the hesitation for a little bit. As far as fuel usage, I have not seen any change, I'm still getting about 22 mpg. Any suggestions whats going on? What to check/test first? Thanks! J 2002 Nissan Maxima SE 3.5L, 6 sp, 6 cyl 116K miles

If the mechanic cleaned the MAF sensor and it helped for a bit, it's quite possible the sensor is bad. I have not had much luck cleaning airflow sensors. Usually replacement is recommended, although rather expensive. Since you have a warm start problem, you should also check the Coolant Temperature Sensor. If it's out of range, it will cause improper fuel delivery. These are not the only things that can cause this problem, however, the most common. Steve

Thanks for the reply Steve! What is the average lifespan of a MAF would you say? Because I bought the car used I have no way of knowing how old it is. I googled CTS and you're exactly right about my symptoms; trouble starting at normal temp. Since a CTS is much cheaper than a MAF I think I'll start there. Like I told my mechanic.....I'll be back I'm sure! Thanks again! J

islandguy; Be sure to check for green corrosion in the connection at the CTS. Very common on Nissans. You can buy a spray can of electrical cleaner at the parts store. Loren SW Washington

islandguy; Good question. Never tried MAF cleaner. We have both, and use them accordingly. Maybe, one of the other guys will chime in? Loren SW Washington

Ok I changed the CTS and ran the car until it was at normal temp. Restarted and still same symptom. Bogs down almost until it dies but doesn't. Someone told me it could be the timing? What do you think? I only drove less than a mile. Do you think the ECU needs more time to relearn to make any difference? Thanks J

islandguy; May be time to have the computer scanned. If it isn't storing trouble codes, should be able to see live data to give a clue to what's going on. Loren SW Washington
