2002 Dakota 6 cylinder.........intermittent problem, idles rough then when driving and accelerating it backfires and cuts out..........cannot maintain a 50-60 mph speed w/o cutting in and out. Then if I disconnect just one of the injector plugs momentarily .............it will run fine until the ignition is turned off and then started up again. Then it does the same thing!! Ideas anybody?

Jimmy; Your '02 Dodge computer has misfire detection. If you have a cylinder misfiring for whatever reason, it should turn on the check engine light, and store the trouble code in memory. Have the code, or codes, retrieved and post them for us. Most parts stores will do this for free. Just don't let them sell you any parts at this point.

Thank you sooooooo much for your reply. In checking the computer faults that come up on the instrument panel readout......... bearing in mind that I have NOT reset the PCM memory since I disconnected the injector plug enabling the engine somehow to run smoothly w/o problems......

The fault codes that came up were,

P0202
P0123
P0128

I do have the book and will look them up but, would sure appreciate your opinion/feedback also...

Thanks and Best Regards, JC

Jimmy; The P0202 is injector #2 circuit. You may have 'induced' this code by disconnecting it. The P0123 is TPS (throttle position sensor too high). I'm hesitant to tell you to replace the sensor, but it does match the symptoms. If you have an ohmmeter, you can test it. While very slowly 'sweeping' the sensor, watch for any 'glitch' in the readings. The resistance will climb as you go from the stop to wide open throttle. (Of course, do this with the ignition OFF). Also, watch it as you go from WOT back to the stop.

Jimmy; I didn't find a 'description' for P0128. May be a false code or manufacturer specific?

Hooked up the meter to the TPS and got a smooth sweeping reading thru the entire range ...................next ?
