02 Camry stalls at intersections when pressing accelerator Sign In

2002 Toyota Camry V4 automatic 80,000 miles

Car stalls at intersections while idle as soon as I press on accelerator to go. No check engine light. Immediately restarts and runs fine. Twice has stalled in last week. Both times engine had been cold and I had travelled less than one mile. Both times air conditioning was engaged. Car runs fine the rest of time, no sputter or power loss. But when it stalls at a stop sign as I press on accelerator, there's no warning--it just dies.

I've had spark plugs replaced in last year. Alternator and battery replaced 1 1/2 years ago.
First time it only had 2 gallons of gas in tank, second time I had just filled up the day before and had 18 gallon tank full.

Local mechanic says he can't diagnose such an intermittant problem without me giving it to him. He'll drive it around until it does it and charge me $65 an hour. Ouch. He mentioned possibly idle valve that might cost $200 but he'd only seen this problem on V6 never V4.
I'll appreciate any reply.

If this only happens when the engine is cold, I'd want to take a look at the CTS (coolant temp sensor) from cold to warm up. It may not be applying enough fuel when cold. TPS (throttle position sensor) can cause a severe hesitation, come and go with temp changes and not always set a DTC (digital trouble code) as it happens so quickly. The IAC (idle air control) valve can get sticky and gummy over time. Usually can just be cleaned, rather than replacement. You are probably going to have to leave it overnight with someone so it can be checked under those conditions, but I've never heard of someone charging for test driving. Might want to get another 'someone' to check this for you. A 'MotorVac' fuel injection cleaning is recommended every 30-40K miles, which includes cleaning the IAC and throttle body. Should be available at most shops.
Not that it has anything to do with this, but in the future, never let your fuel get that low. 1/8 tank is bare minimum. The electric fuel pump is mounted inside the fuel tank and depends on the fuel to keep it cool.

Re: 02 Camry hasn't stalled once in past week Sign In

Thank you for your detailed analysis.

I've driven it a lot in the past week and not once did it stall. However, ever since I got a new alternator 1 1/2 years ago, every time I engage the A/C there's a noticeable extra load put on the car's power. It's like a switching of vibrations like it's too much for it. This is only noticeable when engaging the A/C at idle.

Is the idle valve something I could clean or does it require removing several other parts or putting the car on a lift to reach it?

Your car working a bit hard when the a/c engaged is normal. The engine idles at a little higher rpm to compensate for the extra power used in the A/C belt. Try putting your car into neutral when you come to stops then back into gear once you accelerate again. Do this but try 1 2 and Drive different times. Also has this only happened 2 times? if not how long has it been going on for. Last poster made a good point with the IAC. It does get sticky sometimes. It can be cleaned id recommend Triflow is a teflon chain lube. Just spray some into the intake at the bottom of the throttle body.

If you dont like the extra pressure the A/C put on your car after the new alt was put in have a quick peek at the belts and make sure they are all intact and in good shape, Is there any squeaking or rubbing?

Re: 02 Camry hasn't stalled once in past week Sign In

02Camry; Any time that you put the HVAC controls into A/C or Defrost modes, the A/C compressor will engage. On a V8 engine, you'd hardly notice it at all. On a 4 cyl, it's putting quite a load on the engine. As the last poster noted, the IAC should compensate for that load by increasing engine speed. Again, cleaning should help. But, if the engine, or even the compressor, has a small problem, it will show up under the added load of the compressor.
I doubt that the alternator has anything to do with what you describe. I'd recommend, if you haven't done it already, having an injection cleaning service done. Poor injector spray patterns can cause a roughness which would be exaggerated when under load at idle. You'll probably notice an increase in performance and fuel economy as well.
