I've had a Check Engine light on my '01 Hyundai Elantra for about a year now. I've driven it with some minor concerns -- for example, the car will be driving on the highway and then suddenly the RPMs kick up to 3 or 4 and the engine changes sound. It'll go back to normal after a couple minutes or if I turn the car off and then back on.
The big problem arose just recently. The car drives normal (at around 2 RPMs), but the engine has developed a consistent, loud sputtering noise and when I come to a red light, the engine stalls. I can successfully turn it back on, but as you can guess, my luck has tun out.
In an effort to save as much money as possible, I'm going to take it to Advance Auto Parts, where they can tell me the fault codes, instead of paying a mechanic to diagnose it. Once I know those codes, I should be able to judge better where to take it. I have a feeling it'll be expensive, nonetheless. Are there any national chains that'll allow payment plans on something big like this? Any advice would be greatly appreciated.

Bear in mind this is just an opinion fron a retired master mechanic . Yes you can get codes read at a auto parts house . But this is far from doing diagnostics . A few times a person may have a o2 sensor code and the owner has a $150 sensor put on and all is well. However most times it is another system or a combination of failures which involve the experienced hands and the knowledge gained from hundreds of hours of study and thousands of dollars in tools .This does not come cheap just as in other proffesional trades. This breakdown is not your first nor will it be your last. In the long run it would be to your advantage to get to know a local shop with professsional techs. They will get to know you and your car and you will come to trust their judgement. Many shops are willing to offer some type of assistance,provided they know you and you have sent them some help by giving them some of the work that pays their bills ,i.e., oil changes , tuneups, brake jobs, belts and hoses. You reap what you sow. IMO

rsherid; As RT said, the trouble codes will only tell you what system is 'seeing' a problem. You can list the trouble code(s) you get and we'll see what we can from them. Just a direction to the 'system' noted. Too late now, but when you get a 'Check Engine Light' illuminated, that is telling you that there is a problem and needs to be addressed. Waiting a year is not a good thing. <smile>

Thanks for all the advice. After letting it sit and not driving it for a couple days, it still has the problem. Along with the Check Engine light, I'd describe it as sputtering or clanking metal in the front of the car - I think it's close to the driver's side/steering wheel.
I know it's near impossible to diagnose over the forum, but any idea as to what it could be?
