Yea I have a 01 Hyundai Elantra with 160,000 on it and it is a 5 speed...... Well to start off with my uncle shut the hood down and didnt put water in it like i had planed on and just drove off with it, and it got hot.... he kept driving it untill it quit.... i went to the car and checked it out No water in the oil When you go to start it it just spins...no fire or almost starting the belts spin...like nocompresion just spins and maks a wineing sound so i stoped trying. My question is can i check the gasket wit out pulling the head...and if i do what do I need to do to properly replace the gasket.. Can the timing belt break due to over heating Im hoping the problem....and what steps do i need to take to change that I do have some knowledge o car just wanting some advice on this problem Thanks for any help you can give

You can be he has toasted it. Just take a compression test to confirm it but you're likely looking for a new engine on this one. ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ We offer help in answering questions, clarifying things or giving advice but we are not a substitute for an on-site inspection by a professional.

That funny sound when trying to start it by key is suggestive of valve timing probably now gone but check. Compression will no doubt show zero. Yes. Heat and overheat don't help anything including timing belts. Careful who you loan cars to, T

The lack of compression has nothing ton do with a timing belt. You have a blown head gasket, cracked head or wasted pistons and cylinder walls.

HT - if valves aren't moving you won't have compression on at least 3 cyl of 4 and if bent valves perhaps none on any. All the other things too that you mentioned, Tom

The problem is the car was overheated, not a broken timing belt.

Agreed: Chances are other things if timing belt was good but still wouldn't like the heat - we don't know how hot it got? Smile/frown, have seen some burn paint off the hood! Tom
